About the Challenge

The Big Frank Challenge (BFC) is a grassroots fitness event held every October. Born in 2020 as the Big Frank Crank n Plank, it started with friends biking and planking during lockdown. It’s now a month-long challenge that blends fitness, camaraderie, and giving back—carried in the spirit of Frank “Big Frank” Sabatasso.

Three commitments:
  • Challenge Yourself – test your limits physically and mentally.
  • Honor a Legacy – celebrate Big Frank’s life by showing up for others.
  • Give Back – raise funds for meaningful causes chosen by participants.

Goal: Earn 100 points in one month by logging qualifying activities. Track your progress on your personal scoresheet and post daily totals to the shared leaderboard.

This Year’s Cause: Beck’s Story

At just 13 years old, Beck Carey has already undergone a life-saving bone marrow transplant to treat a rare immune disorder. The hardest part now is recovery — a long stretch of hospital stays, setbacks, and daily effort to stay strong while his new immune system takes root. Beck shows up with courage every single day, pushing through pain and uncertainty with grit and faith. This year, as you take on the Big Frank Challenge, you’ll be working side by side with Beck — your miles, minutes, and reps echoing his fight to keep moving forward. Your donation directly supports Beck’s recovery and helps his family shoulder the heavy costs of treatment, housing, and care.

Community & Impact

The BFC runs on friendly accountability. Participants use a live, shared leaderboard to post daily totals—creating race-day energy all month. Past BFCs have supported Wounded Warrior Project, Bikes for Kids, Folds of Honor, and the Ellison Institute of Technology.

In Memory

In 2024, we dedicated the Challenge to our friend Christopher “Mezz” Mezzavilla, who created the participant scoresheets. His work and spirit live on in this community.

Who Was Big Frank?

Frank “Big Frank” Sabatasso was the community’s most devoted fan. From youth leagues through college, he showed up with a booming voice and an even bigger heart, cheering not only for his son but for his son’s friends. After a major stroke in 2019, Big Frank lit up Torrance Memorial throughout Covid lockdown, where nurses and therapists cheered him on like teammates—his spirit shining even without a voice. He passed away at home in 2020 and his voice can still be heard at every venue throughout Southern California. The Challenge carries his legacy forward: show up, push yourself, and support each other.
